We owe a little to label limbo for Number 1 Angel, the 2017 mixtape Charli XCX assembled while a proper follow-up to Sucker remained stuck in the pipes. The Cambridge-born pop experimentalist used the detour to venture further into PC Music’s gleaming oddness, with ‘Emotional’ turning an affair into cavernous, doomed pop and ‘3AM (Pull Up)’ making a bad late-night decision sound somewhat buoyant. CupcakKe barges brilliantly through ‘Lipgloss’, too. Supposedly a stopgap, but it ended up sounding more like Charli finding another door and kicking it open
